MDMA is known for its stimulant effects and classed in the amphetamine category. MDMA is also known as ecstasy, molly or mandy (UK). It most commonly comes in a tablet form but can also come as a powder or in capsules. Pills are unreliable as they are frequently mixed with other substances (see adulterants) which can be harmful as it is unknown what could be in them.

General guidelines for dosage is:

  • Light 40 – 75 mg
  • Common 75 – 120 mg
  • Strong 150 – 200 mg


  • Onset : 20 – 70 minutes (depending on form and stomach contents)
  • Peak: 2 – 3 hours
  • Duration : 3 – 5 hours
  • Normal After Effects : up to 24 hours


MDMA is most commonly used when going out to clubs, festivals or parties. This is because of the sensory effects it produces with music and lights. Positive effects include extreme mood lift, increased sociability, energy, feelings of love and acceptance.
